Espiritu Latino is NJRC’s immigration initiative that aims to assist court-involved persons who are foreign-born, speak English as a second language, or face impossible immigration challenges immediately upon release. Through Espiritu Latino, NJRC will offer a bundle of services tailored to the specific needs of the immigration reentry community, including:

Restoring dignity, building trust: Sister Norma Pimentel, M.J.'s repeated phrase "restoring human dignity," Chairwoman Eliana Pintor Marin's observation that "we are all immigrants, at some point" and her focus on children's access to healthcare, and Carlos Eduardo Espina, J.D.'s answer that the biggest barrier right now is trust, and that leaders have to go to people rather than wait for people to come to them.

Nearly all of NJRC’s participants are low-income and cannot afford legal representation. Legal Aid and other providers are able to assist a fraction of the financially eligible applicants who seek their services. As a result, their urgent legal problems are unmet, creating a serious social issue for our courts and the legal community. Espiritu Latino has a network of strong and reliable pro bono attorneys who provide legal representation and consultations free of charge.
NJRC Espíritu Latino
NJRC Espíritu Latino (Latin Spirit) is a new NJRC initiative to assist more Latinos and Latinas returning from the prison system with a range of social services in their own language that specializes in eliminating barriers to successful reintegration into society.

Dr. Castro’s Community Health Initiative: Community health education teaching biology, chemistry, and medicine to help residents better understand their health and care. The initiative is also developing a Community Health and Wellness Center on New York City’s Lower East Side and a resiliency program focused on managing stress and recovering from adversity.
