RWJBarnabas Health and NJRC Launch Street Medicine Team to Expand Access to Care
New partnership brings medical care directly to individuals facing barriers to traditional healthcare.
August 10, 2026
The New Jersey Reentry Corporation (NJRC), RWJBarnabas Health, and Clara Maass Medical Center have partnered to launch a new Street Medicine Team, bringing medical care directly to individuals who face significant barriers to accessing traditional healthcare.
The initiative is led by Dr. Edward J. Egan, Medical Director of the RWJBarnabas Health Street Medicine Program and a board-certified emergency medicine physician at Trinitas Regional Medical Center. Under the community-health leadership of Dr. Balpreet Grewal-Virk, the program is designed to provide direct medical care and continuing treatment to individuals experiencing homelessness and others who face challenges accessing healthcare.
“Healthcare must be available where people are,” said Jim McGreevey, Executive Director of NJRC. “We are grateful to RWJBarnabas Health, Clara Maass Medical Center, Dr. Grewal-Virk, Director Anthony Nuñez Fernandez, Dr. Egan, and the Street Medicine Team for bringing compassionate medical care directly to the people we serve.”
The Street Medicine Team launched its first walk-in clinic on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at NJRC’s Union Reentry Site, located at 324 Trinity Place in Elizabeth.
The program is designed to serve NJRC participants, including individuals returning from court involvement, addiction treatment, and military service. By bringing healthcare directly to the community, the initiative aims to address common barriers such as transportation challenges, missed appointments, lack of identification or insurance, and limited access to primary and specialty care.
Participants can receive care without insurance, identification, an appointment, or payment. NJRC staff will continue assisting participants with health coverage, identification, workforce training, employment services, and other reentry needs.
Services Available
Patients can meet with a physician on a walk-in basis. Services include:
- Physical examinations and general health assessments
- Blood-pressure and blood-glucose monitoring
- Basic diagnostic screenings and laboratory referrals
- Evaluation of routine medical conditions
- Medication reviews and appropriate non-controlled medication refills
- Evaluation and continuation of buprenorphine treatment, including Suboxone, for existing patients when clinically appropriate
- Referrals to RWJBarnabas Health-affiliated clinics and specialists
- Follow-up care coordination
Patients who require advanced diagnostic testing, specialty treatment, or ongoing clinical management will be connected with appropriate RWJBarnabas Health-affiliated providers.
Initially, the Street Medicine Team will visit the NJRC Union Reentry Site once a month, with plans to potentially expand services to twice a month. The team will also assist with urgent clinical needs and care coordination during the week.
This partnership represents an important step in expanding access to healthcare for individuals who may otherwise experience significant barriers to receiving medical services. By bringing care directly to NJRC's participants, the Street Medicine Team supports NJRC's broader mission of helping individuals stabilize their health, overcome barriers, and build successful and productive futures.
