Hours Before Garfield Arrest, Ex-Con Predicted He'd Need Reentry Help Again (Video)

Former NJRC participant reflects on the support he received after incarceration and his hopes for rebuilding his life again.

The New Jersey Reentry Corporation (NJRC) was recently featured in a Daily Voice article highlighting the reentry journey of Danny J. Lorenzana and the support he received from NJRC following his release from prison more than 15 years ago.

On August 3, NJRC shared an interview with Lorenzana on social media in which he reflected on his experience returning to the community and the role NJRC played in helping him move forward.

When asked what it was like coming home, Lorenzana recalled how NJRC supported him after his release, saying the organization helped him transition from being a resident to becoming an employee.

He also expressed his belief that NJRC could provide support again, stating that the same organization that helped him previously would be there to help him again.

Later that evening, Lorenzana was arrested in Garfield following a reported dispute involving a weapon. According to the Garfield Police Department, officers responded to a report of a dispute and subsequently recovered an imitation handgun and two baton-style stun gun devices. Lorenzana was arrested and charged with multiple offenses. The investigation remains ongoing.

The Daily Voice article notes that Lorenzana's interview with NJRC took place only hours before his arrest, highlighting the unpredictable challenges that can arise during the reentry process and the importance of continued access to support services.

Lorenzana closed his NJRC interview with a message of determination and hope:

“If you want it, it’s there. If it’s there, you can obtain it. If you can dream it, if you can think it, you can obtain it.”

NJRC provides comprehensive services to individuals returning to their communities after incarceration, county jail, addiction treatment, as well as veterans returning from combat. Services are designed to help participants overcome barriers to stability and employment through case management, workforce development, healthcare coordination, behavioral health support, legal assistance, and other critical resources.

The story serves as a reminder that reentry is an ongoing process and that access to supportive services can remain important long after an individual initially returns to the community.
